Unfortunately, today, fake watches are becoming more and more common, and often it's difficult to tell apart originals from imitations. Even an expert eye incurs some difficulty, as each day fake ones are getting more and more similar to the originals, and are produced with more precision. For this reason, it's important to pay attention and follow some simple rules which could help to give you greater guarantee.

The following list of advice has been extracted from our editions.

  • When you purchase a vintage watch, even of a lesser-known brand, , ask the dealer to give you a written guarantee, to assure you that the piece is authentic.
  • A case which has no gold guarantee and origin hallmarks, but has just the dealer's logo, is dubbious.
  • The hands of a watch must perfectly match the dial in terms of size and colour. If you find anomalies, be careful!
  • It's interesting to know the code of the metals that Rolex uses both for the watches and the bracelets.
  • The reference number is the one which identifies the model of the watch.
  • The first SUBMARINER version, Ref. 6204, was launched in 1953. This model doesn't yet have the crown guards, or the depth rating or the Mercedes hands.

From a 1959 Rolex catalogue we can read: THINGS YOU MUST KNOW
If you take your watch off at night, both if it is automatic or not, always put it down in the same way.
The rate of the watch can change by some seconds in relation to the position in which it has been put down.

For this reason the official swiss offices control every watch in 5 different positions, because this is the only way to be certain of their precision.

Remember:
1. a watch placed horizontally on a desk, with the dial upwards, gains some seconds during the night.
2. placed in a vertical position, with the winding button downwards, loses some seconds.
3. placed in a vertical position, but with the winding button upwards, loses even more seconds.

The SUBMARINER and the SEA-DWELLER exist only in stainless steel; the SUBMARINER DATE exists in stainless steel, steel/gold, yellow gold 18k and since 2008 in white gold 18K too.
- The watch worn by James Bond in the movie “Dr. No” was a Submariner, ref. 6538.
- The size of the Date Just's case compared to that of the Date is slightly bigger ( 2 mm. difference)
